  • Professional Background: After a highly successful career as a commercial lawyer, he has branched out into publishing both books and newspapers ... At one time he was a serious dressage rider ... Took part in the Whitbread Round The World Yacht Race in 1989, on the leg from New Zealand to Uruguay, as one of his ambitions was to sail round Cape Horn

  • Racing Career: Entered racing in 1986 and first came to prominence in 1988 when Luigi won the German Derby ... Buoyed by that success, he bought Alte Zeit, the filly who ran second to Luigi in the Derby, and had won the Preis der Diana a few weeks earlier. He also bought the Diana second, Britannia, who went on to win him the 1988 Deutsches St. Leger, and is the dam of Borgia ... At that time, he used the stable name of Stall Marcassargues but he switched to Gestut Ammerland when he began to race horses he had bred himself ... His first venture into international racing was with his homebred mare, Borgia, who won the 1997 German Derby and Grosser Preis von Baden as well as the 1999 Hong Kong Vase ... She finished second in the 1997 Breeders' Cup Turf and fifth in the Filly & Mare Turf two years later
  • Breeding/Racing Operation: Has about 30 mares at Gestut Ammerland and maintains a stallion roster of mostly warm-bloods, along with a couple Thoroughbred stallions, including the imported Java Gold ... Has horses in training with Peter Schiergen and Andreas Trybuhl in Germany, Andre Fabre and Guy Henrot in France and Sir Michael Stoute in England ... Gestut Ammerland is the breeder of Hurricane Run and follows Borgia as the operation's second Breeders' Cup starter.
