• Born: 1928 in Sherburne, NY.
• Died: February 11, 2005 in Lexington, KY.
• Family: wife Joan and children Gloria and Thomas
• Personal: Attended University of Notre Dame, where he was an English major before spending two years in graduate study at the University of Kentucky in animal husbandry and genetics. A major contributor to U.K., he assisted in developing the Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center as well as the Gaines Center for the Humanities. Also a major benefactor of the Catholic Newman Center in Lexington. After his death, Joan Gaines pledged $100,000 to create an Endowed Chair in the Humanities to honor the memory of her husband. Gaines was a well-known art collector: He was a member and on the trustee's council for the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; adviser, department of drawings, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; board of visitors, Fogg Museum of Art, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.; member, Japan Society, New York; director, Speed Museum of Art, Louisville, Ky.; fellow, Morgan Library, New York; director, Snite Museum of Art, Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind.; director, University of Kentucky Museum of Art, Lexington.
• Racing: Developed Gainesway Farm near Lexington, Ky., in 1962; sold the farm to South African native Graham Beck in 1989.
• Founder of the Breeders' Cup, he introduced the idea in 1982 at Louisville, where he said, "I have personally spoken to virtually all the prominent breeders in this country and several in Europe, and to a man they have endorsed the program as a means of our industry helping itself."
• Also conceived the idea and was founding chairman of the Kentucky Horse Park
• Originally introduced to racing with Standardbreds, syndicating his first when he was 28. Bred Kerry Way, the 1964 Hambletonian winner and co-owned another Hambletonian winner in Speedy Streak
• Gained prominence in Thoroughbred racing with such top horses as Halo and National Anthem
• Thoroughbred Industry Honors: Thoroughbred Club of America Honor Guest; 1985 special Eclipse Award of Merit; Breeders' Cup Special Award; Duke of Devonshire Award; Lord Derby Award; Joe Palmer Award; Jockeys' Guild Award; John A. Morris Award; John W. Galbreath Award; Shoemaker Foundation Award; Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame
• Co-bred Breeders' Cup starters Time Limit (7th in 1997 Juvenile), Caller One (4th in 2000 Sprint), Imperial Gesture (2nd in the 2001 Juvenile Fillies, 3rd in the 2002 Distaff) and Black Minnaloushe (10th in the 2001 Classic)
