  • Has fared very well in Breeders' Cup races, winning with his first and only mount in 2004 when Ghostzapper won the Breeders' Cup Classic at Lone Star Park. He finished second aboard Bernardini in the 2006 edition of the Classic at Churchill Downs, was third in the  Juvenile Fillies aboard Backseat Rhythm in 2007, and was third in the  Ladies' Classic on Music Note in 2008.
  • Currently based on the New York/Florida circuit of Belmont Park, Saratoga Race Course, and Gulfstream Park. Also will ship to Kentucky's Keeneland Race Course to ride stakes contenders; agent Matt Muzikar, formerly with Eibar Coa, picked up his book in the spring of 2009.
  • Top mounts of 2009 included Capt. Candyman Can (G1 NetJets King's Bishop Stakes, G3 Bay Shore Stakes, Matt Winn Stakes), Gaby's Golden Gal (G1 Acorn Stakes), Telling (G1 Sword Dancer Invitational Stakes), Salve Germania (G2 Ballston Spa Handicap), Criticism (G2 Sheepshead Bay Stakes, G2 La Prevoyante Handicap), El Crespo (G3 Palm Beach Stakes), Flashing (G3 Nassau County Stakes), Heros Reward (G3 Shakertown Stakes), and Wesley (G3 Miami Mile Handicap).

  • Earned his first Classic win with Bernardini in the G1 Preakness Stakes in 2006, a race marred by the breakdown of Barbaro, winner of that year's G1 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands. Ridden by Castellano in all of his starts, Bernardini went on to be named champion 3-year-old of 2006 with additional wins in the G1 Travers Stakes and G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup.
  • Has won riding titles at Aqueduct, Tropical-at-Calder and Hialeah. Twice has won five races on one card at Saratoga. He accomplished the feat in 2004 on Sept. 7 and in 2005 on Sept. 3.

  • Started riding in Venezuela in 1996; moved to the United States a few months later in June 1997, riding on the South Florida circuit. First winner in the United States was Phone Man on July 31, 1997, at Calder.
  • Calls his father, a former jockey who died in 2000, the biggest influence on his career. His uncle also was a jockey and his brother Abel Jr. rides year-round in South Florida. Father-in-law Terry Meyocks is involved in racing as well – a former NYRA and NTRA executive, he currently serves as the national director of the Jockeys’ Guild.
