Biography and Highlights:

- Born: Sept. 19, 1919, Baltimore, Md.
- Resident: Miami Springs, Fla.
- Family: wife Francis, sons Patrick, Danny, Larry, and Timothy; daughters Patricia and Jeanne Marie. Three of Thomas (Tommy) Kelly's sons are involved in racing: Patrick is the trainer of Evening Attire, Larry is an assistant to D. Wayne Lukas in Kentucky, and Timothy works as a racing official in New York
- Tommy Kelly is a Hall of Fame trainer whose career has lasted 54 years
- Best known for 1980 Champion Sprinter Plugged Nickle, who won nine stakes, including the Florida Derby and Wood Memorial
- Also trained 65 stakes winners, including Noble Dancer II, Topsider, King's Bishop and Sauce Boat
- Legend has it that Kelly got involved in racing by jumping the fence at Pimlico upon graduation from high school, ripping his graduation suit in the process
- Worked as a hotwalker for John Hertz
- After service in WWII, Kelly resumed his racing career, obtaining his trainer's license in 1945 and going to work for Thornecliff Farm
- Raced on the New York and Florida circuit
- Kelly retired from training in 1982 but stays involved by breeding a few horses each year.
