- Education: Graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Miami in 1970
- Racing Background: Father Tommy Kelly is a Hall of Fame trainer … Brother Timothy works in the New York Racing Association’s Racing Office … Went to work with his father at the racetrack after graduation from college
- Racing Career: Started his own public stable in 1977 … First win was with Table Hopper at Aqueduct in 1977 … First stakes win was the 1978 Dwyer with Junction … Has trained more than 29 stakes winners … Currently trains about 30 horses in New York … Kelly has saddled four horses for ten Breeders’ Cup starts. None has finished better than Evening Attire’s fourth in the 2002 Classic. Evening Attire, whose graded stakes victories include the 2002 Jockey Club Gold Cup, was presented with the Secretariat Award as the top New York horse by the New York Turf Writers Association in 2002 … Riskaverse has been a top-performing mare in his barn, returning in 2005 for a final attempt in the Filly & Mare Turf before being sold … Other stakes winners he has trained include Naughty New Yorker, Toll Fee, Cozzy Corner, Medieval Moon, Binary Light, Monarch’s Maze, Gator Dancer, Islefaxyou and Christiecat … Recipient, along with other members of the Kelly family, of the 1994 Red Smith “Good Guy” Award, presented by the New York Turf Writers Association. He also was honored for his accomplishments in 1991 with the New York Turf Writers Association’s Outstanding Trainer Award … Voted Outstanding Trainer of New York-breds by the New York Thoroughbred Breeders Association in 1986 … On Sept. 12, 1992, Super Saturday I at Belmont Park, Kelly saddled half-brothers Solar Splendor and Sultry Song to victories in back-to-back grade 1 races, the Man o’ War and Woodward, respectively, for owner Live Oak Plantation. Kelly also trained Sultry Sun, the dam of both winners.
