- Residence: Glendora, Calif.
- Family: wife Annabelle; children son Gary (also a trainer), and daughters Jana and Gail
- Racing Background: Started in 1945 working for trainer Yorky McCleod at Santa Anita. Older brother Warren galloped horses for McCleod ... Saddled first winner, Egg Nog, at Portland Meadows in 1947 ... Saddled first major stakes winner, First Balcony, to win the 1961 Californian at Hollywood Park
- Racing Career: Won the 1986 Preakness Stakes with Snow Chief. Snow Chief was voted an Eclipse Award as best 3-year-old colt or gelding of 1986. Saddled Snow Chief to win two $1 million races, the 1985 Hollywood Futurity and the 1986 Jersey Derby. When Snow Chief retired in 1987, he was the all-time leading California-bred earner with $3,383,210 in purses (now fourth behind Lava Man, Tiznow and Best Pal) ... Trained Brave Raj to an Eclipse Award as top juvenile filly of 1986. Her victories that year included the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies; she set an earnings record of $933,650 for 2-year-old fillies ... Won the following year's Breeders' Cup Sprint with Very Subtle, who won nine other stakes during her career and more than $1.6 million ... Saddled Double Discount to win the 1977 Carleton F. Burke at Santa Anita in a world record 1:57 2/5 for 1 1/4 miles on turf ... Has won 12 training titles including three at Hollywood Park and seven at Fairplex Park (at the L.A. County Fairgrounds in Pomona) where he is the all-time leader in races won. The track honored him in 1999 celebrating the 50th anniversary of his first winner there, Sept. 22, 1949. Was the first inductee into Fairplex Park's Hall of Fame in 2003 ... Underwent successful quadruple bypass surgery at Citrus Valley Medical Center in December of 2000 ... In 2006, saddled Quick Little Miss to win the Barrett's Debutante at Fairplex. The filly was a $40,000 purchase at Barrett's March Selected sale of two-year-olds in training. Part owner Dan Schiffer signed the ticket ... The clubhouse bar at Hollywood Park was renamed in his honor and is the "Mel Stute Bar". There is also a "Stute's Sports Bar" at Fairplex Park ... Son Gary serves as Mel's assistant and also trains a stable of his own.
