Biography and Highlights:
|
|
- Born: June 8, 1980, County Tipperary, Ireland
- Residence: Newmarket, England
- Family: Married to Emma, daughter of former English trainer Lynda Ramsden ... He also is the godson of Irish racing and breeding kingpin John Magnier, owner of Coolmore Stud. His father George was a trainer in Ireland, best known for 1963 Champion Hurdle winner Winning Fair.
- From nine Breeders’ Cup mounts his best finish has been a second on Antonius Pius in the 2004 Mile.
- He has made a strong defence of his British title in 2006 but looks certain to finish second behind another first-time winner, Ryan Moore ... In 2007, he shared the British flat racing Champion Jockeys title with Seb Sanders.
- Leading performers he has ridden include group 1 winners Kyllachy, Brian Boru, Sequoyah, Goodricke, Red Evie, Excellent Art, and David Junior, who gave him his biggest international success to date when running away with the Dubai Duty Free at Nad al Sheba in March 2006. Also won the Coral Eclipse Stakes with David Junior in 2006 and the Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp on Desert Lord.
- He was apprenticed to Irish trainer Liam Browne and rode his first winner on May 11, 1996 at Downpatrick.
- He was only 17 when riding Tommy Stack’s Tarascon to victory in the 1998 Irish 1,000 Guineas. The following year he was Irish champion apprentice.
- In 2000 he moved to England and formed a partnership with trainer Luca Cumani. For that stable his biggest success came aboard Gossamer, winner of the Fillies Mile and Irish 1,000 Guineas, and Endless Hall, winner of the Singapore International Cup.
- In 2004 he moved back to Ireland to become stable jockey for Aidan O’Brien at Ballydoyle, owned by his godfather John Magnier. Although he partnered group 1 winners Ad Valorem (Middle Park Stakes) and Oratorio (Grand Criterium) for the stable, the move was not a success and Spencer was roundly criticized for several of his rides, notably on Powerscourt, who was disqualified from first place in last year’s Arlington Million.
- Spencer quit Ireland in early 2005 for personal reasons that have never been divulged. The move back to England to ride as a freelance was an outstanding success, as he became champion jockey for the first time and rode 180 winners in Britain during the year.
