 Biography and Highlights:
  • Born: Aug. 14, 1950, in Philadelphia, Pa.

  • Background: As a child, he rode pleasure horses at a local riding academy. Went to work at Liberty Bell Racetrack, now defunct, in his native Philadelphia right out of high school
  • Racing operation: Apprenticed under noted Mid-Atlantic horseman Willard Thompson, among others, before receiving his trainer's license on Dec. 20, 1973
  • Trains now from his Laurel Park homebase, but competes in Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania
  • Has been the private trainer for owner Daniel Borislow for nearly 11 years. The two met at Philadelphia Park when Borislow, an avid horseplayer at the time, approached Scanlan and asked if he would train some horses for him. Borislow had much success wagering on Scanlan's first-time turf horses and was intrigued by the trainer's record

  • Current stable encompasses 20 horses, all belonging to Borislow
  • Best Horses: Earned his first career Grade I win in this fall's Champagne Stakes with Toccet, his first Breeders' Cup entrant
  • Gained national exposure in 2001 with Talk Is Money, who was third in the Flamingo Stakes and second in the Federico Tesio before finishing last in the Kentucky Derby
  • Scanlan and Borislow claimed Dinner in Rio for $50,000 on April 6, 1994, and won three stakes with him that year, including the Seneca Handicap at Saratoga-Scanlan's biggest career victory prior to Toccet's 2002 Champagne score
  • Other stakes-caliber horses currently in his barn include Steiners Baby Girl and Pleasant Divorce
  • Through Sept. 28, the stable had won 21 of 80 starts for earnings of $619,827.
