Biography and Highlights:
|
|
- Born: June 5, 1964
- Grew up in Canton, Mass.
- Resident: Delaware and Florida
- Gorham has always been around a racetrack. His father owned horses at Suffolk and Rockingham. As a teenager, Michael Gorham started working as a hotwalker for New England's perennial leading trainer Bruce Smith. He went out on his own in 1985 and registered his first win with Unerring at Suffolk Downs. When slot machines were introduced in Delaware, causing a giant spike in the purse structure, he relocated there. His two top horses are in his barn right now: Nastique Stakes' winner Lily's Affair and Mandy's Gold, winner of the Ruffian Handicap as well as the Chicago Breeders' Cup Handicap at Arlington Park this year. Of Mandy's Gold: “She has an excellent disposition,” said Gorham. “As perfect a horse as you can have in your barn. She trains good, ships good, nothing bothers her; different surfaces, different racetracks. She does whatever you want her to.” Gorham has 40 horses stabled at Delaware for owners such as Ronald and Alice Schmidt, John D. Murphy, as well as Steeplechase Farm, which is owned by Gorham's brother John. Mandy's Gold will be Gorham's first Breeders' Cup starter
