He rode at Hollywood and Santa Anita over the winter of 2000-'01 then returned to Europe. The highlight was winning the Prix du Jockey-Club – the French Derby – on Anabaa Blue for trainer Carlos Lerner.
Soumillion's 2003 season was highlighted by his five wins at Longchamp on Arc day, winning three group 1 races, including two classics aboard Fabre-trained 3-year-olds – Musical Chimes won the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (French 2,000) and Clodovil lifted the colt’s equivalent, the Poule d’Essai des Poulains. He also landed the Prix Lupin on Dalakhani and later, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Soumillon finished the season as champion jockey in France with a total of 207 victories.
The 2004 season saw further success for Soumillon, with group 1 wins in the Prix de Diane on the Jean-Marie Beguigne-trained Latice, and in the Prix Jacques Le Marois aboard the Robert Collet-trained Whipper. But he finished in second place in the French jockeys’ table with 165 wins ... He regained the title in 2005 riding a national record 226 winners in France, including seven group 1 victories.
