Frankel, a Juddmonte Farms’ homebred, was named in honor of Racing Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel, who passed away in November 2009, when the colt was a yearling.
Frankel closed his storybook career unbeaten in 14 lifetime starts.
In 2011, he took home top honors in Europe when he was voted the Cartier Horse of the Year, as well as top 3-year-old male. He’s been atop the world Thoroughbred rankings since August 2011, when he recorded his eighth win in eight starts.
The colt gave his connections a fright in spring 2012, when he suffered a training injury in April, but he quickly rebounded. Away from the races for seven months, he came back in his usual brilliant style, winning the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury in his return in May and the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes by 11 lengths in June at Royal Ascot. He won three more Group 1 races in 2012 to secure his second straight Cartier Award as Europe's Horse of the Year.
