Blog - FASHION

There are certain things one can count on in this life, aside from death and taxes.  In the fashion world, trends come and go, appearing on the runway one season, and ending up in the clearance bin one year later.

Thankfully, there are a few pieces a lady can always rely on when getting gussied up for a day at the races.  Hats, skirts, fanciful jackets, and shoes are discussed, dissected and assessed before finally, the outfit is complete and you are ready for a glass of champagne.

THE FULL SKIRT

1) The Full Skirt – I refer to this piece as a “poofy” skirt because I love the way it makes me feel (light, up for anything, ready to cheer on the winning horse).  You have the option of going for a tamer color like navy or black, or perhaps you’re feeling a bit more bold, and want to try something like Patterson J. Kincaid’s Laverne Brocade Skirt.  Like I said, it’s bold, but by no means tacky.  Just be sure to tone down your accessories so that the poofy skirt gets all the attention.

THE WHITE DRESS

2) A Simple White Dress – Nothing is as classic as a well-designed white dress, be it sleeveless or otherwise.  Not only that, but a white dress that fits well provides the perfect blank canvas to decorate.  Throw on a colorful belt, or perhaps some fantastic wedges to smarten up your look.  Better yet, go for broke in an eye-grabbing hat.  My favorite dress right now is the fit and flare dress from Express.

ESPADRILLES

3) Espadrilles – The great thing about horse racing is that it takes place during a pleasant time of year, thus commanding you to put away those winter boots and bust out your seasonal best.  Espadrilles will never, ever go out of style.  Might I suggest J. Crew’s Seville Wedge Espadrilles in flax?

THE JACKIE CARDIGAN

4) Cardigan – While blazers and denim jackets go well with just about anything, a cardigan is the best ladylike choice for keeping warm while still allowing your dress/poofy skirt to shine.  In fact, J Crew’s “Jackie” cardigan is a timeless addition to that gold brocade skirt I was telling you about (see #1).

TOM FORD SUNGLASSES

5) A Good Pair of Sunglasses – Trends are exhausting to keep up with, because as soon as you spend your money on what’s “in,” it’s suddenly out.  Why not invest in something that will last much longer than this month’s issue of Vogue?  Try on Tom Ford’s Christophe Oversized Sunglasses.  Don’t be intimidated by “oversized.”  The shape of the frames fit almost any face, making you the woman everyone wants to stand beside (it’s the power of Tom Ford, I tell you).
