In English and en Español

The road to the Kentucky Derby continues this Saturday with the $350,000 Tampa Bay Derby (G2) at Tampa Bay Downs and the $300,000 San Felipe Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park. Both races are worth a total of 85 points in the Kentucky Derby points system and will award points to the first four finishers: 1st (50 points), 2nd (20 points), 3rd (10 points), and 4th (5 points).

Let’s take a look at the San Felipe Stakes:

Flashback looks to extend his record to three wins in as many starts when he faces seven opponents in the San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita Park. His main rival is the horse immediately to his outside, Goldencents.

Flashback had no problem stretching out to two turns in winning the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G2) by 6 ¼ lengths in February and looks to put up another big performance today under regular rider Julien Leparoux.

FLASHBACK

Even though Flashback won his last race on the lead, I see him rating behind the speedy Salutos Amigos, who comes into this race off a fast win at shorter distance. The unknown factor for Salutos Amigos is that he has never raced this far, but he might prove to be dangerous if he is allowed to set a comfortable pace under jockey Martin Garcia.

Behind Flashback, I see Goldencents, Hear the Ghost and Carving getting a comfortable trip while waiting to make their move. The next group I see behind those are Kochees and Omega Star close to the back of the pack while Tiz a Minister trails the field like he did last time out in his fast-closing win.

It will be interesting to see how the pace unfolds given that Salutos Amigos, Flashback and Goldencents all have shown enough speed to possibly put them in control of the race early on, but if the San Felipe unfolds as I imagine, I don’t see the winner coming from too far back.

My selection to win the San Felipe is Goldencents. I liked the way he won the Sham Stakes (G3) and also like the way he has been training leading up to Saturday’s race. His record is strong; he has raced four times at four different tracks and has three wins and one second-place finish. He showed - just like all the other runners in this field - there still is room for improvement, and he definitely is one of the top contenders in the road to the Kentucky Derby (G1).

My Selections:

1st - Goldencents

2nd - Flashback

3rd - Hear the Ghost

My Bets:

$1 Exacta: 3 with 2,5,6,7 = $4

$1 Trifecta: 3 with 2,5 with 2,5,6,7 = $6

Total: $10

Primero - Goldencents

Segundo - Flashback

Tercero - Hear the Ghost

Mis apuestas:

$1 Exacta: 3 con 2,5,6,7 = $4

$1 Trifecta: 3 con 2,5 con 2,5,6,7 = $6

Total = $10
