"Larry said of all the trophies he has, this is the one he has most prominently displayed and is most proud of," Romans said Dec. 5 after receiving the award from the Turf Publicists of America during a luncheon at the University of Arizona Global Symposium on Racing and Gaming.
Romans, who is based in Kentucky but also races on the major circuits in Florida and New York, has had a super 2012 with 18 graded stakes victories including the Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) with Little Mike. He was recognized by the TPA for his willingness to deal with the media throughout the year.
"When I got the call, I didn't know much about this award," Romans said. "I thought, 'Why would they give me an award to talk about horses when that's the only thing I know how to talk about?' "
Romans said he got a phone call from broadcaster Bob Neumeier, who congratulated him on winning the Big Sport of Turfdom.
"He said it was a big deal," Romans said. "He said it's an award that shows you care and that you promote the sport. I saw the list of people who have won this award, and I thank you for adding my name to that list."
Romans has a farm in Kentucky and is a member of the board of directors of the Kentucky Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association.
