Shakin It Up made his 2013 debut an impressive one at Santa Anita Park on Sunday when he shook off the competition in the stretch of the San Vicente Stakes (G2) for his first career stakes win.
Ridden by David Flores, Shakin It Up sat around the third position behind Belvin and Caballo Del Cielo after being taken up out of the gate. The Bob Baffert-trainee attempted to make a move in the far turn but was temporary blocked before finding a hole in the stretch. The race turned extremely competitive coming to the wire as four horses, including Shakin It Up, battled for the lead. The Midnight Lute colt had one more burst of speed as they approached the wire, finally drawing away to win by a length in a time of 1:22.48 for the seven furlongs.
In one of the closer races of the weekend, the entire San Vicente field was separated by only about three lengths from Shakin It Up to last place Belvin.
Treasury Bill closed from last to get up to second with Caballo Del Cielo rounding out the trifecta.
"He put me in a spot I wasn’t expecting," Flores said after the race. "He put me in the race right away, so I just had to be patient and wait for the pocket to open, and that’s pretty much what happened. When I asked him to go he accelerated, a tremendous acceleration.”
The win was the second in four starts for Shakin It Up, who broke his maiden in November by 4 ½ lengths before finishing third in the Hollywood Prevue Stakes (G3). The $90,000 winner’s share of the San Vicente took the colt’s winnings to $139,600.
Shakin It Up topped off an unofficial Silverbulletday card for Hall of Famer Baffert and owners Mike Pegram. The two, who paired up to win the 1999 Kentucky Oaks (G1) with the mare, won Santa Anita’s fifth race with Govenor Charlie, a colt by Midnight Lute out of Silverbulletday daughter Silverbulletway. Shakin It Up, also owned by Dennis Cardoza, is out of a half to Silverbulletway and by Midnight Lute. Shakin It Up is the second foal from Silver Bullet Moon, a mare by Vindication.
A $2 win ticket on Shakin it Up paid out $6.40.
