Native Dancer won his first race, at Jamaica racetrack, and would go on to win 21 of 22 lifetime starts and earn champion honors in each of his three years of racing for owner and breeder Alfred G. Vanderbilt II. Known as the Gray Ghost because of the color of his coat, Native Dancer became wildly popular on television due to being easily recognizable to viewers.
