U.S. Representative Brett Guthrie (R-KY)

District:  2nd in central Kentucky – home to Louisville suburbs, Fort Knox, Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace, and Bowling Green.

Experience:  Congressman Guthrie is serving his second term in the U.S. House of Representatives. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and was first elected to public office in 1998 to the Kentucky Senate.

Key Committee: Congressman Guthrie is a member of The House Energy & Commerce Committee, the oldest standing legislative committee in the House. The Commerce Committee has broad jurisdiction over the nation’s telecommunications, consumer protection, food and drug safety, public health research, environmental quality, energy policy and interstate and foreign commerce.

Impact on the Horse Racing Industry:  The Commerce Committee oversees the Interstate Horseracing Act (IHA) which is important legislation for our industry because the IHA was amended in 2000 to legalize pari-mutuel wagering on horse racing via the Internet. The NTRA’s federal legislative team is working with members of the Commerce Committee to protect horse racing’s interests in connection with recent efforts at the federal level to expand Internet poker.
