My father used to take me to the track occasionally when I was in junior high in the early 1970s, handed me a Daily Racing Form when at Ponoma Fair, and I was hooked. 50-year horseplayer later discovered Oaklawn, Sunland Park in New Mexico, Birmingham Race Course in Birmingham, Ala, the Nebraska circuit, then back to Oaklawn. Served as a public handicapper for El Paso Times (1988-1989), Birmingham News (1989-1991), Racing Times (1991-1992) and most recently the Hot Springs Sentinel-Record from January of 2018 to May of 2025. Worked for 25 years as the Deputy Sports Editor of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Have followed Oaklawn closely since 1992. Claim to fame was selection of Sir Cherokee ($113.20 to win) in the 2003 Arkansas Derby posted on Oaklawn Insider web site.
