This Day in History: 1863-08-03
America’s oldest Thoroughbred racetrack, Saratoga Race Course, opened its inaugural meet with four days of racing. Since then it has been the site of some of racing’s most famous upsets, inlcuding those by Man o’ War and Triple Crown champion Gallant Fox, prompting the track to be called “The Graveyard of Champions.” Triple Crown champion American Pharoah’s stunning loss to Keen Ice in the 2015 Travers Stakes is yet another example of the upsets seen at Saratoga.
