In his first start ever on the turf, John Henry, an eventual four-time Eclipse Award male turf champion, won a $35,000, 1 1/16-mile claiming race by 14 lengths at Belmont Park. John Henry was voted male turf champion for the years 1980-81 and 1983-84.
