The top two 3-year-olds in the latest NTRA Top 3-Year-Old Poll – undefeated Kentucky Derby presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) hero Justify and Derby runner-up Good Magic – are set to face off again in Saturday’s Preakness Stakes (G1).

This week’s poll results, released five days prior to the middle jewel of Thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown – were largely unchanged from the prior week, which reflected the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks results. The top seven in the poll is the same, with Justify (39 unanimous first-place votes, 390 points) and Good Magic (349 points) followed by Derby third Audible (312), Derby fifth My Boy Jack (177), Longines Kentucky Oaks-winning filly Monomoy Girl (155), Derby 12th Bolt d’Oro (125), and longshot Derby fourth Instilled Regard (107).

Upon further reflection, voters moved Arkansas Derby winner and Derby 19th Magnum Moon (87) into eighth, ahead of stablemate and Derby ninth Vino Rosso (73). Kentucky Utilities Transylvania Stakes (G3) winner Analyze It (70) moved into 10th and is the highest-rated turf specialist in the sophomore rankings.

The NTRA Top 3-Year-Old Poll is the sport’s most comprehensive survey of experts ranking the generation of Thoroughbreds that includes all Triple Crown contenders. Every week eligible journalists and broadcasters cast votes for their top 10 horses, with points awarded on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis. The Top 3-Year-Old Poll concludes June 11, after the Belmont Stakes.

Justify’s Derby propelled him to second in the NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll for horses of all ages, where he remains this week. Once again he was the clear leader in first-place votes, with 22, versus 10 for West Coast, but lagged in overall points, 326 to 285. 

The NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll concludes November 5 after the Breeders’ Cup.
