Q&A with Chris Podratz

Do you have any children? 1 Daughter, 1 Son, 1 Granddaughter, 2nd grandchild on the way.
What was the first contest you played in and when? NHCQualify.com in 2011
What do you like most about handicapping contests? I like the different challenges of the various contest formats, and the relationships created with other horseplayers throughout North America.
What is your favorite racetrack? Santa Anita Park (Team Eddie Logan)
How did you get interested in handicapping contests? When my son started high school, I was able to retire from coaching youth baseball and pop warner football, and apply that time back into following horse racing. I read an article in the Daily Racing Form regarding the NHC contest in Las Vegas. I did a little more surfing around about other contests and NHC contests and entered a contest on NHCQualify was lucky to win an entry pretty quickly, played in my first NHC in 2012 and finished 11th. I was hooked, my dad was hooked, the following year my cousin Kenneth McMahan and his wife Jeannie King were hooked.
What is your favorite restaurant in Las Vegas? Del Frisco’s
What do you like best about the NHC? The event in its entirety. Spending time with my family (some also NHC contestants) in Las Vegas, getting to see many of the horseplayers that I have had the opportunity to meet over the years at various live contest venues, the NTRA staff, the intensity of the contest, and energy in the contest room, especially for the mandatory races.
What are your ideas to improve the NHC? I think there might be some opportunity in changing the format. I have provided some suggestions in the past as well as have read some interesting suggestions from other NHC members. There might be an opportunity of having a pilot group of NHC members who did not qualify and are willing to participate in pilot runs of alternative formats concurrent with the NHC. You could even have the members participating in the pilot be competing for NHC seats for the following year.

Canterbury Park Dog Days of Summer Handicapping Contest
The Annual Dog Days of Summer Handicapping Contest is returning September 16-17 for its 27th year. America’s longest running live-bankroll handicapping tournament will yield two NHC seats, large cash prizes, and promises to be two days of intense competition.
“We have been fortunate to host an NHC qualifier for nearly three decades at Canterbury Park. I have tried various formats in addition to Dog Days but this one has stuck so this September will be the 27th annual contest,” said Jeff Maday, of Canterbury Park. “We have locals that have played every year and many horse players that have traveled from around the country for going on twenty years. It is that camaraderie that really makes these events enjoyable for me. I might see some of these folks once a year, but it is in a special setting and for the same purpose that we all congregate. Dog Days is a highlight of my year every year for that reason.”
The two day tournament, starting at 10:00 am on Saturday the 16th, features a $500 entry cost ($100 entry fee and $400 live bankroll) and players may wager on all contest-eligible tracks (tracks will be listed week of event). Any money won through tournament wagers can then be wagered in subsequent bets. Order of contest finish will be determined by final bankroll. First place will win a NHC entry plus $1,000; Second place will win a NHC entry plus $750; and third place will win $500 cash.
