Second Regulatory Veterinarian Continuing Education Conference is Sold Out

The meeting scheduled for March 4-5 at Gulfstream Park Racing and Casino includes registrants from almost 50 North American racetracks in 20 U.S. jurisdictions, and six countries.

Organized by Steve Koch, executive director of the NTRA Safety & Integrity Alliance, and Dr. Dionne Benson, executive director and COO of the RMTC, participation in the conference is limited to active official veterinarians employed or sponsored by a racetrack or regulatory authority.

“The success of the inaugural RegVetCE, and the oversold registrations for its Gulfstream Park follow-up, signal that our regulatory veterinarians strongly value this critical initiative,” Koch said. “We are grateful to our financial supporters that make this program possible. Horses, horsemen and all racing stakeholders benefit from this collaboration that enables national uniformity of veterinary and regulatory procedures.”

The 2019 RegVetCE is officially approved for 18.25 veterinarian continuing education credits by the Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE) program of the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB).

Speakers and topics for this year’s conference include:

·        Dr. Cynthia Cole D.V.M., Ph.D., D.A.C.V.C.P. (University of Florida) on pharmacology for regulatory veterinarians.

·        Dr. Barrie Grant D.V.M., M.S., D.A.C.V.S., M.R.C.V.S. (California Horse Racing Board) on pre-race examination decision-making.

·       Dr. Rick Arthur D.V.M. (California Horse Racing Board), Dr. Tessa Muir B.V.Sc., Cert. A.V.P., M.R.C.V.S. (British Horseracing Authority), and Izzy Trejo (New Mexico Racing Commission) on out of competition testing strategies

·        Dr. Mary Scollay D.V.M. (Kentucky Horse Racing Commission) on regulating therapeutic medication.

·        Anthony Fontana Ph.D (Truesdail Labs), Petra Hartmann M.S. (Industrial Labs), and Dr. Lynn Hovda RPh, D.V.M., M.S., D.A.C.V.I.M. (Minnesota Racing Commission) on laboratory performance standards.

·        Ashley Hill Ph.D (U.C. Davis) on statistics of medication regulation.

·       Dr. Kenton Morgan D.V.M., D.A.C.T. (Zoetis) on compounding, mislabeling, and illegal new medications.

·       Dr. Dionne Benson Esq. D.V.M. (Racing Medication & Testing Consortium), Dr. Tessa Muir (BHA) and Alex Waldrop Esq. (NTRA, RMTC) on comparing international and U.S. medication regulation.

“With an emphasis on medication, pharmacology, and medication regulation, RegVetCE19 enables participants to better communicate with all stakeholders regarding issues that affect horses, trainers, and veterinarians,” said Benson.

The inaugural two-day RegVetCE was held last June at Keeneland and covered topics related to pre-race examinations, on-track protocols, test barn best practices, data and documentation, technology resources, and biosecurity.
